The Jewish Studies department at the University of Haifa has grown, expanded, reorganized, and consequently given birth to a new type of program. The department now offers a graduate level degree in Jewish History and thought, facilitating study of a unique combination in Judaic studies. This new and dynamic program combines Jewish history, philosophy, biblical studies, and mysticism in one curriculum.
The program is taught in English and is intended for students who wish to deepen their knowledge of Judaics, and of Israel. The program’s faculty is home to scholars in biblical studies (including the Dead Sea Scrolls), Antiquity, the Middle Ages, Early Modern and Modern Jewish History and thought. Throughout the duration of the program, students have the opportunity to visit important historical sites in Israel to facilitate experiential learning. Central to the curriculum is the study of Northern Israel; touching upon the history and culture of the Galilee and surrounding region.
Students may study for a semester, one year, or to the completion of their degree. The program can serve as a companion to curriculum in other programs like Israel, Middle Eastern, or Holocaust studies. There is also an option to combine the program’s course of study with Hebrew or Arabic language classes.
