It all started with a vision; a movement. A dream for the Jewish people. The MA program in Israel Studies at the University of Haifa offers an in-depth study of Israel spanning the inception of the Zionist movement up until present day. The curriculum centers on examining communities of the Jewish diaspora, the Zionist movement and their influence on the modern state of Israel, multicultural societal complexities and all.
The program is geared towards students who seek to expand their comprehension of the experiences of the Israeli population through the lens of 20th century Jewish history, Middle Eastern politics, and society. Students will take a look at migration and aliyah, culture, religion, economics, politics, and its union with Israel’s people and Jews who live abroad.
Taught entirely in English, this 1-year program spans 3 semesters and offers rigorous academics as well as a field campus feature, during which students and faculty spend 3 days in one of Israel’s most storied regions. Students have the opportunity to visit locations like the Negev desert, Lower and Upper Galilee, Beit She’an Valley, Jordan Valley, and Jerusalem. While in the field, students will approach their research as an exploration of the area’s past and present challenges and complexities. Throughout the duration of the program, students will have the opportunity to become acquainted with Israeli citizens and public figures alike with the hope of engaging in dialogue and becoming part of a community.
