If your goal is to become a biblical scholar in multiple contexts, consider the M.A. program in the Bible and Ancient Near East at Hebrew University, the only 2-year graduate-level program offered in the institution. In this program, students will develop a foundational knowledge in both Modern and Biblical Hebrew as they focus on contemporary biblical studies (Hebrew scriptures).
The program allows students to specialize in one of two tracks: The Bible: Cultural and Historical Context and The Bible and the Ancient Near East. Students are required to study modern and biblical Hebrew regardless of their chosen study track. Students may also be required to study other ancient languages like Greek, Ugaritic, or Aramaic. The language instruction component of the degree program’s coursework promotes the ability to read scholarly texts in Hebrew. However, if you have little to no knowledge of Hebrew, enrollment in Ulpan prior to the program is required.
Jerusalem sets the stage for meaningful study and research, as well as providing easy access to significant historic sites of interest all around the country and in surrounding regions. In this program, students will be able to study the land of the bible while living in it among Israelis and other international students. Extracurricular opportunities are abundant, as lectures, seminars, organized trips, and social events are readily available.
